The Ian MacRae Radio School is now offering a Radio Copywriting Course, for students with little or no experience in advertising.

The radio industry is consistently after talented copywriters who understand how to write effective ads. This could be you.

If you enjoy creative writing, this course in copywriting could be the first step towards actually earning a living doing what you enjoy.

In just 6 weeks you will learn:

  • Basic Marketing theory - Understanding positioning statements, Unique Selling      Points (USPs), your target audience, hooks and offers.
  • The Advertising Brief - What makes a good brief?
  • Generating Ideas - Where do ideas come from and how can we trigger them?
  • Scripts - Layout, timing, editing, tone of voice, SFX.
  • Writing Campaigns - They're not that hard!
  • Directing Talent - Taking your scripts to the next level.
  • What else will I write? Community Service Ads, Jingles, Live Reads, Testimonials, Promos.
  • Common mistakes made by Copywriters - Not just spellling errors.
  • Dealing with clients... and sales reps.
  • The next step - Getting into the industry, salaries, goal setting

The classes are held across six Thursday nights from 6pm till 9pm in our meeting room on the ground floor at 185, Elizabeth Street, Sydney.

There is some theory, but in essence the course will be very practical and you’ll be writing ads from day one! The course will also offer insight into writing for other media, like TV and press advertising.

Furthermore, classes are limited to 6 students to ensure plenty of one-on-one attention.

By the end of the course, you’ll be armed with a portfolio of scripts, and most importantly, a solid understanding of copywriting. Then, as a free bonus, we’ll take you to a professional production studio where you’ll go behind the scenes and be shown just how a national radio commercial is produced.

Your teacher will be Michael Caloudis who has worked in the advertising industry for 8 years. After several years at 2SM, Michael was hired as a Senior Writer by 2MMM in 2000, then Creative Director of 2MMM/2DayFM in 2002. He now writes copy on a freelance basis for radio and print.

If you already have radio announcing, DJ, production or sales experience, this is a great opportunity to enhance your employment prospects with an additional skill. Being multi-skilled will give you the edge in a competitive market. Whilst employment is not guaranteed at the end of the course, we will use our many years experience to steer you in the right direction.

BUT...as we do have strict limits on class numbers, you'd better be quick! (See, we'll even teach you how to put hooks in your ads.)
